Web hosting review

Web Hosting Canada

Web Hosting Canada shows renewal prices on its shared plan cards, and its terms and help center explain refund periods per service, a 24-hour support guarantee, daily backups and how to move a domain away. Harder to pin down were whether prices include tax, renewal prices for WordPress and VPS plans, a readable incident history, a company registration number and the limit behind "unlimited" storage. The terms and some help articles describe renewal refunds and backup size limits differently.

Price over time

Shared hosting renews at 1.6 to 2.6 times the intro price

This is common in hosting, and Web Hosting Canada shows both prices on its shared plan cards. Intro prices need a 36-month term paid upfront. Monthly prices in Canadian dollars from whc.ca/canadian-web-hosting on 21 Oct 2026; the page doesn't say whether sales taxes are included.

What we found

Each finding links to the Web Hosting Canada page it came from. Prices are the Canadian-dollar prices on whc.ca; the pages we read don't say whether sales taxes are included.

An AI read Web Hosting Canada's public pages to write these findings. When something is partly clear or not seen, it may be explained on a page we didn't read, or our scan may have missed it.

Honest pricing

Partly clear · 5 pts

Each shared plan card shows the intro price, the 36-month upfront total and the renewal price. Go is C$3.89/mo, billed C$140.04 for 36 months, and renews at $6.99/mo; renewal prices are written with "$" rather than "C$", and the struck-through C$9.99 on the same card is higher than the renewal price. Managed WordPress and VPS plans show "as low as" or struck-through prices without a renewal price or term. The terms say payments are in Canadian dollars and renewals are charged at the regular rate on the invoice. We didn't see whether sales taxes are included, on the plan pages or in the terms.

The terms and privacy policy name WHC Online Solutions Inc., trading as Web Hosting Canada, at 7250 Clark Street #301, Montreal, Quebec H2R 2Y3. The terms are governed by Quebec and Canadian federal law, with disputes going to the courts of the District of Montreal. The About page says WHC has operated since 2003, is privately owned, and lists Emil Falcon as Founder & CEO. We didn't see a company registration number on the pages we read.

The footer links to a status page at whcstatus.ca, but it needs JavaScript to show service status, so we couldn't read current status or past incidents. A search of whcstatus.ca listed individual incident pages, but those pages blocked our reader. The terms guarantee 99.9% server availability per month. For unscheduled downtime beyond 43 minutes in a month, you can claim 5% of your pre-tax monthly fee per extra hour, up to 100%, through the Client Area.

Reachable support

Technical support is available 24/7 by phone (1-514-228-1830 or toll-free 1-888-545-3942), live chat and tickets from the Client Area. Sales and billing teams work weekdays from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Eastern Time. The terms guarantee a response to support requests within 24 hours, or a credit of 25% of your pre-tax monthly fee per incident, capped at 100%. VPS and dedicated pages promise a first response in 60 minutes or less, 24/7, under Standard Management. Plan pages describe support as bilingual.

The refund policy gives 30 days for web, WordPress and reseller hosting prepaid for 3 months or more, 7 days for monthly-paid services and cloud servers, and no refund for domains, privacy protection, dedicated servers once delivered or setup fees. You cancel through the Client Area at least 10 days before the renewal date. Renewal invoices are issued at least 15 days before expiry and the card on file is charged 5 days before the due date, at the regular rate. The terms, last modified on 18 May 2023, say prepaid funds and renewals aren't refunded after the guarantee period. The help article, updated in March 2026, says renewals can be refunded up to 5 days after they renew.

Data

Backups you can use

Clear · 10 pts

A help article says backups run daily by default and are kept for 14 days, and are included with Canadian Web Hosting and Reseller plans. You restore or download files, databases, email or the full account yourself in cPanel's JetBackup. Shared plans list 10 GB, 25 GB or 50 GB of backup space. The terms call these courtesy backups that aren't guaranteed and may be turned off for accounts over 10 GB or 100,000 files, while the Acceptable Use Policy says 20 GB or 200,000 files. Cloud and dedicated servers need the External Backups add-on, also daily with 14 days kept, and we didn't see its price.

Data

Security basics

Clear · 10 pts

Shared and WordPress plans include a free SSL certificate, which the WordPress page says is active by default. Shared servers run Imunify360 with a firewall, malware detection and real-time monitoring. For the WHC account, email two-factor login sends a 5-digit code on new logins and account changes, and a help article explains using Google Authenticator instead. We didn't see backup or recovery codes on the pages we read.

Data

Data location

Partly clear · 5 pts

Two blog posts from April 2025 name three server locations, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, and say new customers choose one at checkout, while existing customers ask support to migrate. The product pages only say "100% Canadian datacenters" and, on the About page, the East and West Coasts. The privacy policy says personal information is stored in Canada, except as described, and that some may be transferred to other countries for processing. It has a section for EU users, but we didn't see a data processing agreement or the GDPR named on the pages we read.

The shared plan table lists CPU, memory, I/O, entry processes and inodes: Go has 100% CPU, 768 MB RAM and 150,000 inodes, and Enterprise 200% CPU, 3,144 MB and 450,000 inodes. Storage and traffic are "unlimited" on every plan, with a footnote tying this to regular small business use under the Acceptable Use Policy. That policy sets no fixed disk limit, but says shared accounts may not use more than 5% of system resources for over 60 seconds or grow disk use by more than 10 GB in 24 hours. The page also calls Pro "up to 2x" performance while its table shows 150% CPU. VPS plans list cores, RAM and SSD: 2G has 2 cores, 2 GB RAM and 25 GB SSD.

On shared and reseller plans, JetBackup in cPanel lets you download a full backup, your home directory, databases and email accounts. Servers without JetBackup can generate a full cPanel backup and download it over FTP or the File Manager. To move a domain away, you turn off Registrar Lock in the Client Area and request the transfer key, which is emailed to you; the domain must be at least 60 days old. We didn't see a WHC fee for moving a domain away. The terms say expired services may be permanently deleted at WHC's discretion, with no timeline, so download your data first.

Tech stack

Best for WordPress and PHP sites

Hosts are built for different kinds of sites. Here is what Web Hosting Canada says it runs, and on which plans. Tech fit is separate from the signal score.

Best fit: tools built for it on regular plansSupported: runs on some plans, with limitsVPS plans: you set it up yourself on a server

WordPress

Best fit

Managed WordPress plans WP Go, WP Pro and WP Beast host one WordPress site each, with daily backups, 1-click restores, Imunify360 and free SSL. One-click staging is listed on WP Pro and WP Beast. Shared plans also list WP-CLI and free website migration.

Plans: Managed WordPress and shared plans

PHP

Best fit

PHP 8.2 (the default) and 8.3 are supported and maintained, and older versions from 5.2 to 7.x run as hardened CloudLinux builds. You switch versions in the control panel. Shared plans list SSH access, and cPanel includes Git version control.

Plans: All shared, reseller and WordPress plans

Node.js

The server specifications article says you can deploy and manage Node.js applications through cPanel. The shared hosting page doesn't mention Node.js, and we didn't see version numbers or a setup guide.

Plans: Shared hosting, per the help center

Python

Supported

The same article lists a Python Application Manager for deploying Python apps from cPanel. We didn't see Python versions, or Django or Flask guides, on the pages we read.

Plans: Shared hosting, per the help center

Docker & containers

VPS plans

We didn't see Docker mentioned on the pages we read. The VPS page offers AlmaLinux, Debian or Ubuntu on the 2G plan, full root access if required, and one-click deployment of apps such as n8n. The 2G plan has 2 cores, 2 GB RAM and 25 GB SSD, shown at C$18.50/mo.

Plans: VPS, from 2G

Sales practices

Worth a closer look

We check five common sales practices and note them next to the score, without changing it. Two need a pass through checkout, which this scan didn't do. We'll add them on the next recheck.

  • Noticed
"Unlimited" without a stated limit. Every shared plan lists unlimited SSD storage and traffic, and Pro and Enterprise list unlimited websites. A footnote ties this to regular small business use under the Acceptable Use Policy, which sets a 5% system resource rule but no storage number. It may be published somewhere we didn't look.
  • Not checked yet
Add-ons ticked for you at checkout. This scan didn't go through checkout.
  • Not checked yet
Prices that change at the payment step. The pages we read don't say whether sales taxes are included in listed prices. We didn't check the final checkout total.
  • Not noticed
Countdown timers that reset. No timers on the pages we read. Plan cards carry "Save 61%" style labels and the menu has a "Hot Deals" link, without an end date.
  • Not noticed
Reviews with no source. The reviews page groups short reviews under Google, Facebook and Trustpilot, each section linking to that platform. Individual reviews show a first name and initial, without a date or a link of their own.
