Web hosting review

STRATO

STRATO's English site shows one monthly price per hosting plan with no intro discount, names the company you sign with, and explains two-factor login, data centres in Germany and how to export your data clearly. A few things were harder to pin down: a status page, support hours and response times, refunds after the 30-day money-back period, and CPU and memory per plan. The hosting page gives both a 6-month and a 12-month contract term.

Price over time

No intro price, so nothing jumps at renewal

STRATO shows one price per plan, with no intro discount and no renewal price. The hosting page gives a 6-month contract period in one place and a 12-month minimum term in another, and contracts renew for the same length. Monthly prices in pounds sterling, which the page says exclude VAT, from strato-hosting.co.uk/hosting on 21 Oct 2026.

What we found

Each finding links to the STRATO page it came from. We used the English UK site, strato-hosting.co.uk; prices are in pounds sterling, which the pages mark as excluding VAT.

An AI read STRATO's public pages to write these findings. When something is partly clear or not seen, it may be explained on a page we didn't read, or our scan may have missed it.
Price

Honest pricing

Clear · 10 pts

Hosting plans show one monthly price, with no intro discount, no separate renewal price and no setup fee. Basic Web is £4.00/mo, Power Web £6.00/mo, Advanced Web £10.00/mo and Enterprise Web £15.00/mo. The pages say "Prices excl. VAT". The hosting page gives the term two ways: the price note says the contract period is 6 months, while its terms table and the homepage say 12 months. The terms let STRATO change prices at the start of the next term, with at least one month's notice.

People

Who runs it

Clear · 10 pts

The imprint names STRATO GmbH, Otto-Ostrowski-Straße 7, 10249 Berlin, Germany, registered at Berlin-Charlottenburg under HRB 270570 B, with VAT ID DE 211 045 709. It also lists four managing directors and a phone number. The terms and privacy policy name the same company and address. The About page says STRATO was founded in Berlin in 1997 and is part of the stock-listed IONOS Group SE.

Problems

Uptime in public

Partly clear · 5 pts

We didn't see a public status page or incident history on the pages we read. The help centre start page has a "latest notes" section, but it showed no details when we looked. The terms promise availability of at least 99% as an annual mean for STRATO's servers and data paths. We didn't see credits or compensation for missing that figure.

People

Reachable support

Partly clear · 5 pts

The contact pages list one channel: a contact form, answered by email by "STRATO experts". The hosting page lists email service and the FAQ database on every plan. We didn't see support hours, response times, live chat or a UK phone number on the English pages. The cancellation help article mentions telephone support for withdrawing a cancellation late, and the imprint lists a German phone number.

Price

Fair terms

Partly clear · 5 pts

The hosting and domain pages offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, claimed with a click in the customer login, but we didn't see what it excludes. The terms give consumers 14 days to withdraw, not business customers. Contracts renew automatically for the length of the first term, and you cancel at least one month before the term ends. You cancel in the customer login under Contract Amendment, Cancellation; within the first 30 days it takes effect at once. We didn't see whether refunds are possible after the money-back period.

Data

Backups you can use

Partly clear · 5 pts

STRATO Backup Control is included on Power Web, Advanced Web and Enterprise Web, not on Basic Web. One help article says web space backups run at 08:00, 16:00 and 24:00, with daily backups for 3 days and weekly backups for 4 weeks; another says backups from the past 14 days can be restored. You restore files yourself in the customer login, or download backup folders over SFTP. Databases are backed up daily and kept for up to 7 days, and you can download them. We didn't see whether restores cost anything, and the terms say customers should make their own backups.

Data

Security basics

Clear · 10 pts

The hosting page says a default SSL certificate is included with all domains, and lists SiteLock Scan on every plan, without describing it further. The STRATO login supports two-factor login with an authenticator app, which you switch on under Customer Data; we didn't see backup codes. SiteGuard logs unexpected changes to your web space and can write-protect directories against scripts. The About page says STRATO has held ISO 27001 certification since 2004.

Data

Data location

Clear · 10 pts

The hosting page says data centres are located exclusively in Germany. A help article on data processing names two data centres, in Berlin and Karlsruhe, says data is mirrored between them and processed only there, so there is no location to choose. A data processing agreement can be signed for free in the customer login under My Contract, Change Contract. The privacy policy says STRATO may transfer personal data outside the EU with safeguards; we didn't see a list of sub-processors for hosted data.

Real specs

Partly clear · 5 pts

Hosting plans list web space, databases, mailboxes and SFTP accounts as numbers: Basic Web has 50 GB, 2 databases and 1 mailbox of 3 GB. We didn't see CPU or memory for any plan. Traffic is "unlimited" on every plan, without a stated limit. An older help article sets a PHP memory limit of 128 MB per script, but it covers PHP 5 versions only.

Easy exit

Clear · 10 pts

A help article explains how to export your data, free of charge: website files over SFTP or as a zip from the web space manager, databases through phpMyAdmin, and email from Webmail settings. Export stops once a cancellation takes effect, so it needs to happen first. To move a domain, you request the AuthInfo code in the customer login once the domain is set to cancel, and STRATO also emails it 30 days before the end date. We didn't see a fee for moving a domain away; the terms say a registrar change is possible 60 days after registration at the earliest.

What you get per plan

These numbers come from the hosting plan table on strato-hosting.co.uk. These are the smallest, second and largest of the four plans; Advanced Web sits between Power Web and Enterprise Web. CPU and memory weren't on the pages we read. Bars compare each row against the largest plan.

Tech stack

Best for PHP sites

Hosts are built for different kinds of sites. Here is what STRATO's English site says it runs, and on which plans. Tech fit is separate from the signal score.

Best fit: tools built for it on regular plansSupported: runs on some plans, with limitsVPS plans: you set it up yourself on a serverNot offered: look at another host

PHP

Best fit

The hosting plans are built around PHP, with SSH and SFTP on every plan and PHP 8.4 from Power Web up. A help article says at least PHP 8.4 is recommended, and older versions such as 8.1 get security patches only through paid PHP Extended Support, with no price given. The plan table also lists Perl and Git.

Plans: Power Web and up for PHP 8.4

WordPress

Supported

WordPress, Joomla, Typo3 and Drupal are listed from Power Web up, not on Basic Web. You install WordPress with the AppWizard in the customer login, which also installs updates. We didn't see a WordPress hosting plan page on the English site, staging or a migration service, though a help article mentions a WordPress Hosting Pro package.

Plans: Power Web and up

Python

Supported

The plan table lists Python and Ruby from Power Web up. We didn't see which Python versions are available, or a help article on running Python apps such as Django or Flask.

Plans: Power Web and up

Node.js, Docker & servers

Not offered

We didn't see Node.js or Docker on the pages we read. The English site's product pages list hosting, domains and HiDrive storage, but no VPS or server plans, although the help centre has articles for existing server customers.

Plans: Not listed on the English site

Sales practices

Worth a closer look

We check five common sales practices and note them next to the score, without changing it. Two need a pass through checkout, which this scan didn't do. We'll add them on the next recheck.

  • Noticed
"Unlimited" without a stated limit. Every hosting plan lists unlimited traffic, with no limit on the plan page. The terms don't set out a general fair-use limit.
  • Not checked yet
Add-ons ticked for you at checkout. This scan didn't go through checkout.
  • Not checked yet
Prices that change at the payment step. Listed prices exclude VAT, and domains carry a £3.29 setup fee. We didn't check the final checkout total.
  • Not noticed
Countdown timers that reset. No timers or limited-time offers on the pages we read.
  • Not noticed
Reviews with no source. No customer reviews or ratings on the pages we read.
