Web hosting review

Northflank

Northflank is a developer platform for running services, jobs and databases in containers, on its own managed cloud or in your own cloud account, billed by the second. Its site clearly explains compute prices and specs, who runs it, database backups and its public status page with incident history. A few things were harder to pin down from the website alone: support hours and response times, a GDPR data processing agreement, and refund and cancellation rules in the terms.

Price over time

No intro price, so nothing jumps at renewal

Northflank shows one price per compute plan, with no intro discount and no renewal price. Usage is prorated to the second with no minimum term on pay-as-you-go, and disk and outbound traffic are extra. Monthly prices in US dollars from northflank.com/pricing on 21 Oct 2026; the page says estimates exclude VAT and GST.

What we found

Each finding links to the Northflank page it came from. Prices are the US-dollar prices on northflank.com/pricing, which says its estimates exclude VAT and GST.

An AI read Northflank's public pages to write these findings. When something is partly clear or not seen, it may be explained on a page we didn't read, or our scan may have missed it.
Price

Honest pricing

Clear · 10 pts

Northflank has no intro price and no renewal price: each compute plan has one monthly price, prorated to the second, with no minimum term on pay-as-you-go. The smallest plan (0.1 shared vCPU, 256 MB) is $2.70/mo, and custom sizes cost $0.01667 per vCPU and $0.00833 per GB of memory an hour. Disk costs $0.15 per GB a month and outbound traffic $0.06 per GB, with free ingress. The pricing FAQ says you're charged at the end of each monthly cycle, that estimates exclude VAT and GST, and that tax is collected in some countries.

People

Who runs it

Clear · 10 pts

The terms say you sign with Northflank Ltd, under the laws of the United Kingdom, with the courts of England and Wales. The site footer gives company number 11918540 and the registered office at 20-22 Wenlock Road, London N1 7GU. The About page names Will Stewart as co-founder and CEO and Frederik Brix as co-founder and CTO. We didn't see a founding year; the homepage says teams have used Northflank since 2019.

Problems

Uptime in public

Clear · 10 pts

A public status page tracks 11 components, such as the app, the API, builds, networking and certificates, each with a 90-day uptime bar. On 21 Oct 2026 it showed all systems operational, with 99.95% uptime for the platform group and 99.82% for the app. Its notice history listed four resolved incidents from 5 Aug to 20 Oct 2026, including a partial control plane degradation of 6 hours 50 minutes on 20 Oct, with older pages behind it. The terms promise only commercially reasonable efforts to stay available; an SLA is listed for Enterprise.

People

Reachable support

Partly clear · 5 pts

The pricing page lists basic email support on all plans, and the docs give support@northflank.com. The contact page gives contact@northflank.com and a contact form. The plan table lists support levels from "Best effort" to "Proactive", and Enterprise adds 24/7 support with an SLA and a dedicated Slack channel. We didn't see support hours or response times for the self-serve plans, or a phone line or live chat, on the pages we read.

Price

Fair terms

Partly clear · 5 pts

The terms say all purchases and resource use are non-refundable, so there is no money-back period. They also say Northflank may change prices at any time, without a stated notice period, and we didn't see auto-renewal rules. Usage is billed monthly and the Sandbox plan is free. The docs explain how to delete a team or account from its settings and say any pending invoice and remaining usage are billed on deletion; the terms themselves don't describe how to cancel.

Data

Backups you can use

Clear · 10 pts

For databases (addons) you can set up to three backup schedules, hourly, daily and weekly, plus manual backups. You choose how many days each backup is kept, or keep one forever. You restore a backup yourself from the Backups page, and database dumps can be downloaded as .gz or .zst files; global backups can be restored or forked into another project or region. Volume backups are manual only, and we didn't see a price for backup storage or restores. The pricing page lists backups on pay-as-you-go.

Data

Security basics

Partly clear · 5 pts

TLS certificates from Let's Encrypt are created automatically and renewed before they expire, including wildcard domains; the docs don't say whether they cost anything. You can turn on two-factor login with an authenticator app in your account settings, and the security page says organisation admins can require it. The control plane and paid clusters sit behind Google Cloud Armor for DDoS protection, Snyk checks code dependencies, and the site lists SOC 2 Type 2 and HIPAA. We didn't see malware scanning on the pages we read.

Data

Data location

Partly clear · 5 pts

The docs list 17 managed-cloud regions, some by city (Frankfurt, Zurich, Ohio, California, Delhi) and others only by area, such as Europe West or Asia East. You pick the region when you create a project and can't change it later; with bring-your-own-cloud, workloads run in your own cloud account. The security page says the control plane runs on Google Cloud in London or Amsterdam. The privacy policy mentions an EEA representative without naming it, and we didn't see a GDPR data processing agreement on the pages we read.

Real specs

Partly clear · 5 pts

Every compute plan lists vCPU and memory as numbers next to its monthly and hourly price, from 0.1 shared vCPU and 256 MB for $2.70/mo up to 32 dedicated vCPU and 488 GB. The quotas docs give default limits such as 8 vCPU and 16 GiB per instance, 2 GiB of temporary disk, 100 projects and 500 services. Disk is $0.15 per GB a month. The free Sandbox includes 2 services, 1 database and 2 cron jobs; the plan table uses "∞" for counts such as projects and users, and the docs give the default quotas.

Product

Easy exit

Clear · 10 pts

You can download database dumps from the Backups page, and the docs explain how to copy files off containers and volumes with the CLI, rsync, curl or wget. Services build from your own Git repository or container image, so your code stays with you. The account deletion guide tells you to export your data first and says deletion is permanent. Northflank connects domains you already own and we didn't see domain registration, so there is no domain to transfer out. We didn't see a fee for leaving.

What you get per plan

vCPU, memory and prices come from the pricing page and the resource plans docs. These are the three smallest compute plans, all on shared vCPU. Bars compare each row against the largest plan.

Tech stack

Best for Node.js, Python and containers

Hosts are built for different kinds of sites. Here is what Northflank says it runs, and on which plans. Tech fit is separate from the signal score.

Best fit: tools built for it on regular plansSupported: runs on some plans, with limitsVPS plans: you set it up yourself on a server

Node.js & Python

Best fit

The docs have guides for Next.js, NestJS, Bun, Deno and other Node.js frameworks, and for Django, Flask, FastAPI and Streamlit. Code builds from your Git repository with buildpacks or a Dockerfile.

Plans: Pay-as-you-go, from $2.70/mo (free Sandbox for testing)

Docker & containers

Best fit

Northflank builds from a Dockerfile or runs a prebuilt image from a container registry. You can also run workloads on clusters in your own cloud account.

Plans: All plans, including Sandbox

PHP

Supported

The languages page lists a Laravel guide. PHP runs like any other app, from buildpacks or a Dockerfile.

Plans: Pay-as-you-go, from $2.70/mo

Static sites

Supported

The languages page lists guides for Astro, Gatsby and React, but we didn't see a separate static hosting product, so a site runs as a regular service billed by its compute plan. The docs index has a page on using a CDN.

Plans: A service per site, from $2.70/mo

WordPress

VPS plans

There is no managed WordPress. A guide runs the official WordPress Docker image with a persistent volume and a Northflank-managed MySQL database you set up yourself, and suggests the smallest compute plan to start.

Plans: Self-managed service, volume and MySQL addon

Sales practices

Worth a closer look

We check five common sales practices and note them next to the score, without changing it. Two need a pass through checkout, which this scan didn't do. We'll add them on the next recheck.

  • Noticed
"Unlimited" without a stated limit. The plan table uses "∞" for counts such as projects, services, pipelines and users, and for Enterprise compute. vCPU and memory are listed as numbers, and the quotas docs give default limits.
  • Not checked yet
Add-ons ticked for you at checkout. This scan didn't go through checkout. The docs say you add a card before creating resources, and the pricing FAQ says adding it only verifies the card.
  • Not checked yet
Prices that change at the payment step. The pricing page says estimates exclude VAT and GST, and the terms say sales tax is added where required. We didn't check a final invoice.
  • Not noticed
Countdown timers that reset. No timers on the pages we read. The homepage gives figures such as "2,000+ startups and enterprises" without saying how they were counted.
  • Not noticed
Reviews with no source. Quotes on the homepage, pricing page and About page carry a full name and company.

Questions to ask Northflank

Each partly clear or unseen signal leaves a question that the website didn't answer for us. Northflank's support can probably answer them before you buy.
