Web hosting review

Krystal

Krystal shows one monthly price per plan with no intro discount, names the company you sign with, and explains support hours, backup schedules, cancellation and how to take your data with you clearly. A few things were harder to pin down: the full list of past incidents, which data centre web hosting runs in, and limits for "unlimited" bandwidth and email. The terms say prices exclude VAT, and the plan pages have an "Include VAT" switch.

Price over time

No intro price, so nothing jumps at renewal

Krystal shows one price per plan, with no intro discount and no renewal price. You can pay monthly, or yearly or every two years for a discount the page gives only as a percentage. Monthly prices in pounds sterling from krystal.io/hosting on 21 Oct 2026. The terms say prices exclude VAT, and the page has an "Include VAT" switch.

What we found

Each finding links to the Krystal page it came from. Prices are the pound sterling prices on krystal.io, which the terms say exclude VAT; the plan pages have an "Include VAT" switch.

An AI read Krystal's public pages to write these findings. When something is partly clear or not seen, it may be explained on a page we didn't read, or our scan may have missed it.
Price

Honest pricing

Clear · 10 pts

Web and Business Hosting plans show one monthly price each, with no intro discount and no separate renewal price: Amethyst is £7/mo, Ruby £11/mo, Emerald £19/mo and Tanzanite £97/mo. Paying yearly saves 16% and every two years saves 25%, but the page gives only the percentages, not the prices. The terms say contracts renew automatically for the same term, and that prices exclude VAT. The plan pages have an "Include VAT" switch, and the VPS page shows its £10/mo price as £12 including VAT. Managed WordPress starts at £15/mo, which the page says excludes VAT at 20%.

Who runs it

Clear · 10 pts

The footer and legal page name Krystal Hosting Ltd, trading as Krystal, registered in England and Wales with company number 07571790 and VAT number 884982260. The registered office is 124 City Road, London, EC1V 2NX. The terms (clause 1.1) and the data processing agreement name the same company and address. The site's summary file says Krystal was founded in 2002, and the green page says it has been a certified B Corp since 2023.

Problems

Uptime in public

Partly clear · 5 pts

The footer links to a status page at krystalstatus.uk, run on incident.io. We could read a single past incident there: on 5 Jan 2026, connectivity to 23 named shared, business and reseller servers was degraded for about 17 minutes. The status page's history page didn't load for us, so we couldn't see the full list of past incidents or any uptime figures. The SLA promises 100% network availability for web, business, reseller and managed WordPress hosting, with credits of 5% of the monthly fee per 30 minutes, capped at the full month. The plan table on /hosting lists a 99.99% uptime guarantee, which reads differently.

People

Reachable support

Clear · 10 pts

Support tickets are open 24/7 through the Client Area. Live chat runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 8pm, and phone support Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, except bank holidays. A 24/7 emergency phone line is included on Sapphire, Diamond and Tanzanite only, and on managed VPS and dedicated servers. The hosting page shows last week's figures, such as a 10-hour average ticket resolution time and a 19-minute average chat wait. The SLA's promise to acknowledge a request within 2 hours covers managed VPS and dedicated servers only.

Price

Fair terms

Clear · 10 pts

Web hosting, business hosting and VPS come with a 60-day money-back guarantee, minus the cost of any domain, and domain payments can't be refunded. Managed WordPress offers a 30-day free trial instead, and we didn't see a money-back guarantee for it. You cancel in the Client Area, choosing immediately or at the end of the billing period. The terms say contracts renew automatically for the same term, ask for 30 days' written notice, and say pro-rata refunds aren't owed if you cancel during an annual or multi-year term. The help article on cancelling doesn't mention the 30-day notice.

Data

Backups you can use

Clear · 10 pts

cPanel hosting backups are stored off-site with JetBackup. Amethyst and Ruby get daily backups with 31 restore points, Emerald gets 12-hourly backups with 60, and Sapphire, Diamond and Tanzanite get 4-hourly backups with 180, covering 30 days. You restore or download files, databases, email or the full account yourself in cPanel, and we didn't see a fee for that. Some FAQ text says Emerald and up get 4-hourly backups, which reads differently from the plan table. Managed WordPress keeps daily backups for 30 days, plus up to 2 manual backups.

Data

Security basics

Clear · 10 pts

Free SSL certificates are included on all plans. Two-factor login for the account is set up in Krystal Identity, with an authenticator app or a security key such as a YubiKey, plus recovery codes; it's recommended but optional. The technology page lists real-time malware scanning of uploads, weekly scans of stored content, a mod_security firewall and CloudLinux account isolation. Managed WordPress adds automated malware scanning and Patchstack-based protection against known plugin, theme and core issues.

Data

Data location

Partly clear · 5 pts

The green and technology pages name the data centres: Netwise East in East London as the flagship, Telehouse North in London, Iron Mountain in Amsterdam, Edison (New Jersey) and Phoenix, and Redcentric in London for backups. The WordPress hosting page mentions a UK-based data centre, but we didn't see which facility web hosting uses, or whether you can choose. The VPS FAQ lists London, New York and Amsterdam, while the VPS configurator we read offered only London. A GDPR and UK GDPR data processing agreement is part of the terms, with no separate signature. It doesn't name processing countries, and we didn't see a sub-processor list.

Real specs

Partly clear · 5 pts

Web and Business Hosting plans list CPU cores, memory and storage as numbers: Amethyst has 1 core, 2 GB RAM and 10 GB NVMe storage, and Tanzanite has 9 cores and 18 GB RAM. From Emerald up, storage and websites are "unlimited", and a help article sets a limit of 2.5 million files. Bandwidth and mailboxes are unlimited on every plan, without a stated limit; the business hosting FAQ says the Acceptable Use Policy still applies. Managed WordPress plans list visits and storage, and a help article says each site gets 2 CPU cores and 4 GB RAM across two containers.

Easy exit

Clear · 10 pts

You can download a full account backup yourself from JetBackup in cPanel as a .tar.gz file, or download single databases and partial backups. To move a .uk domain, you enter the new registrar's IPS tag under Release Domain in the Client Area; for .com and similar domains, you unlock the domain and get an EPP code, which arrives within 24 hours. We didn't see a fee for moving a domain away. Cancelling deletes websites and email, within a few hours for an immediate cancellation, so export first. The terms say Krystal will provide a copy of your hosted materials after termination if it still holds them.

Tech stack

Best for WordPress and PHP sites

Hosts are built for different kinds of sites. Here is what Krystal says it runs, and on which plans. Tech fit is separate from the signal score.

Best fit: tools built for it on regular plansSupported: runs on some plans, with limitsVPS plans: you set it up yourself on a server

WordPress

Best fit

Onyx is Krystal's managed WordPress platform, from £15/mo excluding VAT, with two staging sites per live site, LiteSpeed Cache, Patchstack-based protection and free migration of up to three sites. cPanel plans also run WordPress with one-click installs through Softaculous, and staging you set up yourself.

Plans: Managed WordPress from Personal; all cPanel plans

PHP

Best fit

cPanel plans let you switch PHP versions per account in Select PHP Version, and Krystal offers hardened, patched older versions if a site needs them. The plan table lists SSH and Git access, and Git is used over SSH.

Plans: All Web and Business Hosting plans

Node.js

Supported

cPanel's Setup Node.js App tool lets you run Node.js apps on shared hosting. Support covers only checking that a simple demo app works, and Krystal recommends a non-cPanel VPS for production Node.js apps.

Plans: cPanel hosting; VPS for production

Python

Supported

The plan table lists Python, and cPanel's Setup Python App tool creates Python apps. As with Node.js, support stops at a working demo app, and Krystal recommends a non-cPanel VPS for production Python apps.

Plans: cPanel hosting; VPS for production

Docker & containers

VPS plans

We didn't see Docker on the pages we read. VPS plans give full root access with AlmaLinux, Ubuntu, Debian or Fedora, unmanaged by default, from £10/mo (£12 including VAT) for 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM and 25 GB.

Plans: VPS, from £10/mo

Sales practices

Worth a closer look

We check five common sales practices and note them next to the score, without changing it. Two need a pass through checkout, which this scan didn't do. We'll add them on the next recheck.

  • Noticed
"Unlimited" without a stated limit. Every plan lists unlimited bandwidth and mailboxes, and Emerald and up list unlimited websites and storage. Storage has a stated limit of 2.5 million files, but we didn't see a number for bandwidth. The business hosting FAQ says the Acceptable Use Policy still applies.
  • Not checked yet
Add-ons ticked for you at checkout. This scan didn't go through checkout.
  • Not checked yet
Prices that change at the payment step. The terms say prices exclude VAT, and the plan pages have an "Include VAT" switch. We didn't check the final checkout total.
  • Not noticed
Countdown timers that reset. No timers on the pages we read. The homepage mentions a buy-one-get-one-free .uk domain offer, with its terms linked.
  • Not noticed
Reviews with no source. The homepage shows five client quotes with names and company sites, each linked to a case study on krystal.io, and links to Trustpilot. The managed WordPress page names Review Signal's benchmarks as the source of its "Top Tier" rating.
