HOSTAFRICA

HOSTAFRICA's terms name the company you sign with, its registration number and address, and spell out refunds, cancellation notice and auto-renewal in detail. Help articles explain two-factor login, backups and how to download your site, databases and domain codes. Harder to pin down were renewal prices for shared hosting, past incidents on the status page, and which country shared hosting runs in.

Price over time

WordPress hosting renews at about a third more than the intro price

HOSTAFRICA shows both prices on its WordPress plan cards. Intro prices need a one-year term paid upfront. Shared web hosting shows one price per plan with no renewal price, so it isn't in this chart. Monthly prices in US dollars from the international site, hostafrica.com/hosting/wordpress-hosting, on 21 Oct 2026. The page doesn't mention tax; the terms say fees include VAT unless stated otherwise.

What we found

Each finding links to the HOSTAFRICA page it came from. Prices are the US-dollar prices on the international site, hostafrica.com; the plan pages don't mention tax, and the terms say fees include VAT unless stated otherwise.

An AI read HOSTAFRICA's public pages to write these findings. When something is partly clear or not seen, it may be explained on a page we didn't read, or our scan may have missed it.
Price

Honest pricing

Partly clear · 5 pts

WordPress plan cards show the renewal price next to the intro price: WP Starter is $5.27/mo, pre-paid for one year, and renews at $7.03/mo. Linux VPS plans show 50% off the first month, then the full price, such as C1 at $4.18 then $8.36/mo, with the offer valid until 31 Dec 2026. Shared web hosting shows one price per plan, from $6.15/mo, with monthly to annual billing, and we couldn't tell which term that price assumes or whether it changes at renewal. The plan pages don't mention tax; the terms say fees include VAT unless stated otherwise.

Who runs it

Clear · 10 pts

The terms name Host Africa (Pty) Ltd, trading as HostAfrica, a private company under South African law with registration number 2008/019975/07. Its registered address is 12 Helena Ave, Helena Heights, Somerset West, Cape Town, 7130, and South African law governs the agreement. The About page says the company was founded in Cape Town in 2008 as Cloud to Machine and renamed Host Africa (Pty) Ltd in 2017. The contact page lists offices in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania.

Problems

Uptime in public

Partly clear · 5 pts

The site links to a Network Status page in the client panel, but it didn't load when we tried it, so we didn't see past incidents. The terms set a target of 99.9% uptime a year and 99% a month, on a best-effort basis. If the target is missed, liability is capped at three months of the base hosting fee, and we didn't see service credits described. The web hosting page claims 99.9% uptime in one place and shows "100% UPTIME" in another.

People

Reachable support

Clear · 10 pts

Support is offered by live chat, support tickets for sales, support, billing and abuse, and phone numbers in Kenya and South Africa. The contact page says live chat is available 24/7, 365 days a year, with answers "in just minutes". A help article says HOSTAFRICA will endeavour to reply to and resolve tickets within 24 hours. The web hosting FAQ gives support hours as 7:00 to 23:00 every day, which reads differently from the 24/7 claim.

Price

Fair terms

Clear · 10 pts

Hosting fees are refundable if you ask within 30 days of your first order and had no HOSTAFRICA services in the previous 12 months. Domains, SSL, software licences and once-off fees are excluded, and the price of a free domain is taken off the refund. Cloud servers, VPS and dedicated servers are refunded only if cancelled within 3 days, and quarterly to annual plans get no pro-rata refund after the first 30 days. Quarterly, bi-annual and annual plans renew automatically, and the terms ask for one calendar month's written notice to cancel. A help article shows you request cancellation in the client panel, either immediately or at the end of the billing period.

Data

Backups you can use

Clear · 10 pts

Shared web hosting includes daily backups and JetBackup, and the FAQ says backups are kept for up to 9 days and can be restored from the hosting control panel. WordPress plan tables list "5 daily backups". Linux VPS plans don't include backups; backup plans cost $0.03/mo per GB, and snapshots are offered. The terms say HOSTAFRICA isn't responsible for backing up shared hosting and ask you to keep your own copies. Restoring a terminated account costs $10.59, per the additional pricing page.

Data

Security basics

Clear · 10 pts

Every shared hosting plan includes free Let's Encrypt SSL. Two-factor login for the client area works with an authenticator app or with codes sent by email, and the app method gives you a backup code to keep. Shared plans list cPGuard anti-malware, ModSecurity, CageFS isolation and a firewall. The WordPress page mentions malware protection only in general terms.

Data

Data location

Partly clear · 5 pts

The Linux VPS page names four countries, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana, and lets you choose your server location, without naming cities. The shared hosting page describes a Tier 3, ISO 27001 "African data centre" without naming the country. The privacy policy, last updated 27 Jul 2026, follows South Africa's POPIA and the GDPR where applicable, and says data may be processed outside South Africa. We didn't see a data processing agreement on the pages we read.

Real specs

Shared and WordPress plans list storage, websites, memory and a "CPU speed" number without a unit. Shared Starter has 20 GB SSD, 2 websites, 1024 MB memory and 20 entry processes. Bandwidth is unlimited, and the page says traffic may be throttled above 500 GB a month. Inodes are unlimited on every shared plan, and Power and Business list unlimited email accounts and databases, without a stated limit. VPS plans list vCPU, RAM and storage, from C1 with 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM and 20 GB.

Help articles show how to create a full DirectAdmin account backup and download it from the File Manager, and how to download a database as an SQL or GZ file. To move a domain away, you unlock it and request the EPP code under Domains in the client panel. We didn't see a fee for moving a domain away, and the additional pricing page lists none. The terms say data is deleted right after termination with no backups kept, so you need to copy it first. A VPS disk image download costs $13.58.

What you get per plan

These numbers come from the WordPress plan table on hostafrica.com. CPU is shown as a "speed" number without a unit. Shared web hosting plans list similar numbers on their own page. Bars compare each row against the largest plan.

Tech stack

Best for WordPress and PHP sites

Hosts are built for different kinds of sites. Here is what HOSTAFRICA says it runs, and on which plans. Tech fit is separate from the signal score.

Best fit: tools built for it on regular plansSupported: runs on some plans, with limitsVPS plans: you set it up yourself on a server

WordPress

Best fit

WordPress plans include staging, built-in caching, daily backups and free SSL, with PHP 8.1 to 8.3. Shared plans add a WordPress Manager and Softaculous. The page says free migration comes with selected plans, without saying which.

Plans: WordPress and shared plans

PHP

Best fit

Shared plans use DirectAdmin with a PHP selector covering 7.x to the latest release, plus phpMyAdmin, cron jobs and Git deployment. SSH is available on request on all plans.

Plans: All shared plans

Node.js

Supported

Every shared plan can run Node.js apps, set up in DirectAdmin with a Node.js version, app root, URL and port. The page shows a Node.js 22 LTS example with npm installs, but doesn't list other versions. SSH must be switched on by support.

Plans: All shared plans, from Starter

Python

Supported

Shared plans list Python among the included software, and the Node.js page says you can "run Python too". We didn't see Python versions, Django or Flask setup on the pages we read.

Plans: All shared plans

Docker & containers

VPS plans

The application hosting page offers a Linux server template with "Docker pre-installed and ready", deployed on a KVM VPS, VDS or dedicated server. Linux VPS plans start at C1 with 1 vCPU and 1 GB RAM, at $4.18 for the first month, then $8.36/mo.

Plans: Linux VPS, VDS and dedicated

Sales practices

Worth a closer look

We check five common sales practices and note them next to the score, without changing it. Two need a pass through checkout, which this scan didn't do. We'll add them on the next recheck.

  • Noticed
"Unlimited" without a stated limit. Shared plans list unlimited inodes, and Power and Business list unlimited email accounts and databases, with no limit on the plan pages. Unlimited bandwidth comes with a note that traffic may be throttled above 500 GB a month. The terms' fair use policy only says speed may be restricted for heavy users.
  • Not checked yet
Add-ons ticked for you at checkout. This scan didn't go through checkout.
  • Not checked yet
Prices that change at the payment step. The plan pages don't mention tax, while the terms say fees include VAT unless stated otherwise. We didn't check the final checkout total.
  • Not noticed
Countdown timers that reset. No timers on the pages we read. The VPS offer of 50% off the first month gives an end date of 31 Dec 2026.
  • Noticed
Reviews with no source. The homepage shows 4.9/5 from 2,808 reviews and links to Trustpilot, Google and HowToHosting. The web hosting page shows 18 short quotes credited only to first names or initials, such as "Liz W." or "Stella", and we didn't see where they come from.
