Web hosting review

Gandi

Gandi is a French domain registrar that also sells web hosting. Its site clearly names the company you sign with, keeps a public status page, names its two data centres, lists CPU, memory and storage for each hosting plan, and explains how to take your site and domain elsewhere. Hosting renewal prices, refund rules, support response times and database backups were harder to pin down from the pages we read.

What we found

Each finding links to the Gandi page it came from. Prices are the euro prices for France on gandi.net/en, which the pages mark as excluding VAT; the US page shows the same plans in US dollars.

An AI read Gandi's public pages to write these findings. When something is partly clear or not seen, it may be explained on a page we didn't read, or our scan may have missed it.
Price

Honest pricing

Partly clear · 5 pts

Web hosting plans show one "From" price each, in euros for France and excluding VAT: Essential €2.00/mo, Starter €3.99/mo, Advanced €4.99/mo, Pro €5.99/mo and Business €7.99/mo. Essential is reserved for new hosting customers, and the footnote says prices are for a one-year subscription and renew "at the standard rate in effect on the renewal date", without showing that rate. The cheap hosting page offers new customers 50% off their first year on a yearly subscription, so we couldn't tell which listed prices are intro prices. A help article says web hosting is billed monthly, with yearly "coming soon", which reads differently from the plan page. Domain prices do show both, such as .com at €11.00 to register and €31.98 to renew.

Who runs it

Clear · 10 pts

The website terms name GANDI SAS, a simplified joint stock company with €630,000 capital, at 63-65 boulevard Massena, 75013 Paris, France. It is registered as 423 093 459 RCS Paris, with VAT number FR81423093459. The About page says Gandi was registered in 1999 and launched in March 2000, while the homepage says it was founded in December 2000. The About page lists offices in Paris, Luxembourg, San Francisco and Taipei, and says Gandi and Total Webhosting Solutions created Your.Online in 2023. For sites on Luxembourg servers, a help article names Gandi International in Bartringen as the host.

Problems

Uptime in public

Clear · 10 pts

A public status page tracks domains, email, the Gandi portal and hosting, including Simple Hosting in four data centres: FR-SD3, FR-SD5, FR-SD6 and LU-BI1. On 21 Oct 2026 it showed "All Systems Operational", with 90-day uptime bars and past entries listed by day, mostly registry maintenance. The history feed lists an incident on 6 Oct 2026, delays on PaaS and Cloud operations at FR-SD3 from 10:47 to 11:09 UTC, and older incident pages keep timed updates, such as an SSL incident on 14 May 2020. The history and uptime pages themselves didn't show entries for our reader. We didn't see an uptime promise or SLA for web hosting.

People

Reachable support

Partly clear · 5 pts

Every web hosting plan lists technical support by email and chat, and the homepage says support is handled in-house, 24/7, in five languages. The hosting page says chat is "Available 24/6" in English, French, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese, and describes email support as 24/7. The help center has a ticket form, and paid phone support is sold to companies for domain name questions. We didn't see stated response times on the pages we read, and our reader couldn't open the contact page.

Price

Fair terms

Partly clear · 5 pts

You can turn on automatic renewal at checkout or later, and renewals are paid from your Gandi prepaid account first, then a saved card; a monthly plan needs a card on file. You delete a hosting from its Overview tab, and it stays available until the end of the current subscription. Refunds go to your prepaid account, and the migration tutorial says deleting an old hosting after a move gives a pro-rated credit there. A .fr domain promotion tied to 12-month hosting says there are no refunds for early termination. We didn't see a money-back period or withdrawal rules for web hosting, and our reader couldn't open the PDF contracts.

Data

Backups you can use

Partly clear · 5 pts

Web hosting includes free automatic snapshots of your website files: two daily ones kept for 24 and 48 hours, and two weekly ones kept for 7 and 14 days. You restore them yourself by copying files from the snapshot folder over SFTP, and we didn't see a fee. Snapshots don't include databases and sit on the same disk as your site, and the docs say they don't replace a real backup. The Trust Center says Gandi's own backups cover only DNS and its own systems, and that customers back up their hosting data themselves.

Data

Security basics

Partly clear · 5 pts

Every plan includes free SSL certificates that renew automatically. The Gandi account supports two-factor login with an authenticator app, recovery codes and USB security keys, and you choose to turn it on. The Trust Center says Gandi is certified by BSI against ISO 27001 and ISO 22301, runs annual penetration tests and uses endpoint detection on its own servers. We didn't see malware scanning or a firewall for customer websites on the pages we read.

Data

Data location

Clear · 10 pts

The Trust Center names two data centres: Equinix PA3 in Saint-Denis, France, and LuxConnect DC2 in Bissen, Luxembourg; the status page lists hosting in FR-SD3, FR-SD5, FR-SD6 and LU-BI1. You choose a location when you set up a new web hosting, and a tutorial explains moving a site to another data centre. GandiCloud VPS runs only in FR-SD6 for now. The contracts page lists a Data Processing Agreement (version 2023.0), and the Trust Center names third parties such as Brevo, Vadesecure and Zendesk. The privacy policy allows transfers outside the EU, such as for 24-hour support, under standard contractual clauses.

Each plan lists CPU, memory and storage as numbers: Starter has 1 CPU, 512 MB and 20 GB, and Business up to 4 CPU, 4 GB and 200 GB, expandable to 1 TB at €0.18/GB a month. Plans also give approximate monthly visits, from about 300,000 to about 5,000,000, and a number of websites. Bandwidth is "unlimited" and databases have "unlimited size", without a stated limit. The WordPress page adds PHP workers per plan, from 2 on Starter to 32 on Business.

Easy exit

Clear · 10 pts

A tutorial shows how to download your site files over SFTP and export databases through phpMyAdmin, or use a WordPress backup plugin, and says the copies let you move to another server. To move a domain away, you copy the authorization code from the domain's Outgoing transfer tab and turn off the transfer lock; .uk domains use an IPS tag instead. Domains generally can't move within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer, and we didn't see a fee for moving a domain away. Gandi Mail on the domain stops right after the transfer, and its data is deleted seven days later. A free domain that came with hosting stays yours if you kept the subscription at least two months.

What you get per plan

These numbers come from the web hosting plan table on gandi.net. The cheaper and US pages say "up to" for CPU and memory, and visits are approximate. Bars compare each row against the largest plan.

WordPress

Best fit

Every web hosting plan has an automated WordPress install, a Varnish cache, free SSL and snapshots. Sales practices

Worth a closer look

We check five common sales practices and note them next to the score, without changing it. Two need a pass through checkout, which this scan didn't do. We'll add them on the next recheck.

  • Noticed
"Unlimited" without a stated limit. Web hosting plans list unlimited bandwidth and databases of "unlimited size", with no limit on the plan pages. Plans do give an approximate number of monthly visits.
  • Not checked yet
Add-ons ticked for you at checkout. This scan didn't go through checkout.
  • Not checked yet
Prices that change at the payment step. Listed prices exclude VAT, and the page offers a 20% VAT view for France. We didn't check the final checkout total.
  • Not noticed
Countdown timers that reset. No timers on the pages we read. Some domain endings carry "Promo" labels with struck-through prices and no end date.
  • Not noticed
Reviews with no source. We didn't see customer quotes. The pages show a Trustpilot link reading "You gave us 4 stars", without a review count.
