Web hosting review

Fly.io

Fly.io runs apps as Docker-based micro-VMs, called Machines, in 18 regions, with volumes and managed Postgres, billed by the second. Its site clearly explains the price, CPU and memory of every Machine, its regions and where data is kept, volume and database backups, and paid support response times, and it publishes a status page with incident history. A few things were harder to pin down from the website alone: a refund policy, a company address, two-factor login for accounts, and how to export a managed database.

Price over time

No intro price, so nothing jumps at renewal

Fly.io shows one price per Machine preset, with no intro discount and no renewal price. Machines are billed by the second while they run, with no minimum term, and prices vary by region. Monthly base-region prices in US dollars from fly.io/docs/about/pricing on 21 Oct 2026; the page doesn't say whether tax is included.

What we found

Each finding links to the Fly.io page it came from. Prices are the US-dollar base-region prices in the Fly.io pricing docs, which don't say whether tax is included.

An AI read Fly.io's public pages to write these findings. When something is partly clear or not seen, it may be explained on a page we didn't read, or our scan may have missed it.
Price

Honest pricing

Clear · 10 pts

Fly.io has no intro price and no renewal price: Machines are billed by the second while they run, with one price per preset and no minimum term. The pricing docs list the smallest preset, shared-cpu-1x with 256 MB, at $1.94/mo in the base region; prices vary by region, and the pricing page shows $2.19/mo for the same preset. Volumes cost $0.15 per GB a month, and outbound transfer $0.02 to $0.12 per GB depending on the region. Neither page says whether prices include tax, and the terms say you pay any sales and similar taxes.

People

Who runs it

Partly clear · 5 pts

The terms say you sign with Fly.io, Inc., under California law. The only address in the terms is a San Francisco address for copyright (DMCA) notices. The security questionnaire says Fly.io is fully remote and has no offices, and the About page says the team has been building the platform since 2017 and lists 54 people across six continents. We didn't see a registered address, state of incorporation, company registration number or founding year on the pages we read.

Problems

Uptime in public

Clear · 10 pts

A public status page tracks the platform by component, with a separate component for each of the 18 regions and for 12 Managed Postgres management planes, and shows uptime percentages for Managed Postgres. Its history page lists incidents back to 2 Sep 2026; on 21 Oct 2026 the latest was a capacity issue in São Paulo on 20 Oct, and the page showed all systems operational. The homepage cites a 99.9% uptime SLA, and the pricing page lists that SLA under the Enterprise support plan, from $2,500/mo. The support docs say issues with a single host show in your dashboard instead.

People

Reachable support

Partly clear · 5 pts

Every account can use the community forum, and billing@fly.io handles invoice and account questions. Email support and a support portal come with paid support plans: Standard at $29/mo with a 36-hour first response, Premium at $199/mo with 24 hours (1 hour for urgent issues), and Enterprise from $2,500/mo with 4 hours, 24x7. A public metrics page showed a median email answer time of 1h 1m over the last 30 days. Support hours are stated only for Enterprise, and the docs say support doesn't cover your own code or framework.

Price

Fair terms

Partly clear · 5 pts

The terms say each subscription term is a month long and renews automatically until either side ends it by written notice, effective at the end of the term. We didn't see a money-back period or refund policy in the terms; the billing docs say Fly.io will discuss refunds for compute created by mistake or traffic from an attack, through billing@fly.io. Price changes apply to existing customers 30 days after they're posted, with an email for material changes. You delete your account yourself under Account > Settings, after deleting apps and leaving organizations, and the docs say requests by email can't be processed. The terms say fees are billed in advance, while the pricing docs describe usage-based, prorated billing.

Data

Backups you can use

Clear · 10 pts

Fly.io takes a daily snapshot of every volume, kept for 5 days by default and configurable from 1 to 60 days. You can also take one on demand and restore it yourself into a new volume. Snapshots cost $0.08 per GB a month after the first 10 GB. Managed Postgres includes automatic backups on every plan, kept for ten days, with point-in-time restore into a new cluster. The docs say volume snapshots shouldn't be your only backup, the terms say Fly.io isn't obliged to back up your data, and we didn't see a way to download a snapshot.

Data

Security basics

Partly clear · 5 pts

Fly.io issues Let's Encrypt certificates automatically, including wildcards. The pricing docs give each organization its first 10 single-hostname certificates free, then $0.10/mo each, or $1/mo for a wildcard. Organizations can require Google or GitHub single sign-on, and the SSO page says two-factor login then comes from those providers; we didn't see a Fly.io two-factor setting for accounts on the pages we read. Volumes are encrypted with per-customer keys, and the homepage lists SOC 2 Type 2. The security questionnaire says Fly.io doesn't run anti-malware agents on its production servers, and the shared responsibility page makes you responsible for what's inside your image.

Data

Data location

Clear · 10 pts

The docs list 18 regions in North and South America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Africa, and you choose the region for each app; Machines and volumes stay in the region where they're created. 13 of these regions can host Managed Postgres. The security questionnaire says app data stays in the regions you deploy to, but volume snapshots, container images, logs and metrics are held in the USA. A GDPR data processing agreement is available on every plan from the dashboard, pre-signed by Fly.io. The privacy policy says account data is processed in the USA under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.

Real specs

Clear · 10 pts

The pricing docs list all 14 Machine presets with CPU count, memory and monthly price, from shared-cpu-1x with 256 MB at $1.94 to performance-16x with 128 GB at $976.25. Shared and performance CPUs are named separately. Volumes go up to 500 GB at $0.15 per GB a month, and Managed Postgres plans run from Basic (shared-2x, 1 GB, $38/mo) to Performance (performance-8x, 64 GB, $1,922/mo). The free trial gives 2 hours of Machine time or 7 days, whichever ends first. "Unlimited" appears only for Anycast IPv6 addresses.

Easy exit

Partly clear · 5 pts

Apps are built from your own code or Dockerfile, so your code stays with you, and fly ssh sftp can download files from a running Machine. You can reach a Managed Postgres database locally with fly mpg proxy or fly mpg connect, but we didn't see export or pg_dump steps on the pages we read. The terms say you can export your data, and the security questionnaire says data is deleted within 30 days after service ends. Fly.io connects domains you already own and we didn't see domain registration, so there is no domain to transfer out. We didn't see a fee for leaving; outbound transfer costs $0.02 per GB in North America and Europe.

What you get per plan

CPU, memory and prices come from the pricing docs, at base-region prices. These are two shared-CPU presets and the smallest performance preset. Bars compare each row against the largest plan.

Tech stack

Best for Node.js, Python and containers

Hosts are built for different kinds of sites. Here is what Fly.io says it runs, and on which plans. Tech fit is separate from the signal score.

Best fit: tools built for it on regular plansSupported: runs on some plans, with limitsVPS plans: you set it up yourself on a server

Node.js & Python

Best fit

JavaScript and Python have full guides, with framework guides for Next.js, Remix, Nuxt, SvelteKit, Deno, FastAPI, Flask and Streamlit, and Django among the main guides. Elixir, Rails and Rust also have full guides.

Plans: Pay as you go, from $1.94/mo per Machine

Docker & containers

Best fit

Every app runs as a container image on a Firecracker micro-VM. fly launch detects your Dockerfile and builds it on a remote builder by default, and the docs say anything not listed runs once you find or write a Dockerfile for it.

Plans: Pay as you go, from $1.94/mo per Machine

PHP

Supported

Laravel has a full guide: fly launch generates a Dockerfile with Nginx and PHP settings and can add Postgres, Redis or Tigris. We didn't see guides for other PHP apps beyond WordPress.

Plans: Pay as you go, from $1.94/mo per Machine

Static sites

Supported

There is no separate static hosting product. The starter guide serves your files from an nginx container on a Machine, set to stop when idle and start on request.

Plans: Pay as you go, a Machine per site

WordPress

VPS plans

There is no managed WordPress. A starter guide runs the official WordPress Docker image and connects it to a MySQL app you set up and look after yourself.

Plans: Self-managed Machines

Sales practices

Worth a closer look

We check five common sales practices and note them next to the score, without changing it. Two need a pass through checkout, which this scan didn't do. We'll add them on the next recheck.

  • Not noticed
"Unlimited" without a stated limit. "Unlimited" appears only for Anycast IPv6 addresses. CPU, memory, storage and transfer are listed as numbers with prices.
  • Not checked yet
Add-ons ticked for you at checkout. This scan didn't go through checkout. The pricing pages list volumes, dedicated IPv4, certificates and support plans as separate charges.
  • Not checked yet
Prices that change at the payment step. The pricing pages don't say whether prices include tax, and the terms say you pay applicable taxes. We didn't check a final invoice.
  • Not noticed
Countdown timers that reset. No timers on the pages we read. The site invites you to "Start for free", and the pricing page mentions up to $15,000 in credit for eligible startups.
  • Noticed
Reviews with no source. Three homepage quotes are credited only to a job title and a kind of company, such as "Staff Engineer, Fintech", with no name or company.
