Web hosting review

DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean is a pay-as-you-go developer cloud. Its site clearly explains prices, per-second billing, bandwidth overage, support response times, uptime and data centre cities. A few things were harder to pin down from the website alone: a company registration number, malware protection, and how to take backups with you, since backups and snapshots can't be downloaded.

Price over time

No intro price, so nothing jumps at renewal

DigitalOcean shows one price per plan, with no intro discount and no renewal price. There is no minimum term: Droplets are billed per second and capped at the monthly price. Monthly prices in US dollars, without tax, from digitalocean.com/pricing/droplets on 19 Oct 2026.

What we found

Each finding links to the DigitalOcean page it came from. Prices are the US-dollar prices on digitalocean.com, without tax.

An AI read DigitalOcean's public pages to write these findings. When something is partly clear or not seen, it may be explained on a page we didn't read, or our scan may have missed it.
Price

Honest pricing

Clear · 10 pts

DigitalOcean has no intro price and no renewal price: the listed price is what you keep paying. The cheapest Basic Droplet is $4/mo ($0.00595/hr), and the cheapest paid App Platform container is $5/mo. Droplets are billed per second with a 60-second minimum, capped at the flat monthly price, and there is no minimum term. Extra outbound bandwidth costs $0.01 per GiB on Droplets and $0.02 per GiB on App Platform. The terms say prices exclude tax unless stated, and the tax page says invoices are in US dollars.

People

Who runs it

Partly clear · 5 pts

The terms say you sign with DigitalOcean, LLC, and give its address at 105 Edgeview Drive, Broomfield, Colorado. The privacy policy names the same company and address as data controller. The About page says DigitalOcean was founded in 2012 and works remote-first. We didn't see a company registration number on the pages we read, or a separate company for EU customers.

Problems

Uptime in public

Clear · 10 pts

A public status page tracks about 28 parts of the service, most of them broken out by region. It lists recent incidents, each with updates and a resolved status, and links to a full incident history. Separate SLA pages promise 99.99% monthly uptime per Droplet and 99.95% for App Platform, with service credits you claim by email.

People

Reachable support

Clear · 10 pts

Every account gets free ticket support, 24/7, with a stated response time under 24 hours. Paid plans shorten this: Developer ($24/mo) under 8 hours, Standard ($99/mo) under 2 hours with 24/7 live chat, and Premium ($999/mo) under 30 minutes with a Slack channel. Support is in English, and other languages are handled with translation tools. We didn't see phone support.

Price

Fair terms

Clear · 10 pts

The terms and the pricing FAQ say plainly that fees are non-refundable, so there is no money-back period. You can cancel from your account settings or through support, and billing stops when you destroy resources or deactivate. The pricing page says you're invoiced on the first of each month for the previous month's usage. The terms allow price changes at any time by updating the pricing pages, with no fixed notice period unless a separate agreement says otherwise.

Data

Backups you can use

Partly clear · 5 pts

Droplet backups are a paid add-on you turn on yourself. Weekly backups cost 20% of the Droplet price and are kept for four weeks; daily backups cost 30% and are kept for seven days. Usage-based backups can run as often as every 4 hours, from $0.01 per GiB a month, kept for a period you choose. You can restore from the control panel, and we didn't see a stated restore fee. The docs say backups and snapshots can't be downloaded.

Data

Security basics

Partly clear · 5 pts

App Platform sets up HTTPS for your domain automatically and includes DDoS mitigation. On Droplets you install a free Let's Encrypt certificate yourself, and Cloud Firewalls are free. Account two-factor login works with an authenticator app or SMS, with backup codes. We didn't see malware scanning on the pages we read.

Data

Data location

Clear · 10 pts

The docs list 16 data centres by city, including Amsterdam, Frankfurt and London in Europe, and you pick a region when you create a Droplet. A data processing agreement covers the GDPR, as an addendum to the terms. It relies on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, with EU standard contractual clauses as the fallback.

Real specs

Clear · 10 pts

Every Droplet plan lists vCPUs, memory, SSD storage and monthly transfer as numbers. The $4 Basic Droplet has 1 vCPU, 512 MiB of memory, 10 GiB SSD and 500 GiB of transfer. App Platform plans list vCPU, memory and included transfer, and the limits page says each container has a 4 GiB temporary disk and no persistent volumes. We didn't see "unlimited" used for resources, only for team members.

Easy exit

Partly clear · 5 pts

You can cancel from your account settings, and we didn't see a fee for leaving. Backups and snapshots can't be downloaded, so the docs suggest copying your data off a Droplet with tools like rsync or SFTP. The terms ask you to export your data before closing, as DigitalOcean deletes it afterwards. DigitalOcean isn't a domain registrar, so there is no domain to transfer out.

Tech stack

Best for Node.js, Python and container apps

Hosts are built for different kinds of sites. Here is what DigitalOcean says it runs, and on which products. Tech fit is separate from the signal score.

Best fit: tools built for it on regular plansSupported: runs on some plans, with limitsVPS plans: you set it up yourself on a server

Node.js & Python

Best fit

App Platform builds Node.js, Bun and Python apps from GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket and redeploys when you push. The product page names Express, Next.js, Nuxt, Django and Flask.

Plans: App Platform, from $5/mo

Docker & containers

Best fit

App Platform runs a Dockerfile or a ready-made image from Docker Hub, GitHub or DigitalOcean's own registry. Droplets also offer a Docker 1-Click image with root access.

Plans: App Platform and Droplets

Static sites

Best fit

The free tier hosts up to 3 static sites with automatic HTTPS and a global CDN, each with 1 GiB of transfer. More static sites cost $3 each.

Plans: App Platform free tier

PHP

Supported

App Platform has a PHP buildpack, and the product page names Laravel and Symfony. Containers have no persistent disk, so uploads need object storage or a database.

Plans: App Platform, from $5/mo

WordPress

VPS plans

A WordPress 1-Click image sets up Ubuntu 24.04, Caddy, PHP 8.3 and MySQL 8.0 on a Droplet you manage yourself. For managed WordPress, the site points to Cloudways, a separate DigitalOcean service on its own website.

Plans: Droplets, from $4/mo

Self-hosted apps

VPS plans

Droplets come with root access over SSH, a choice of Linux systems such as Ubuntu, Debian and Rocky Linux, and Marketplace images like LAMP, MySQL and MongoDB.

Plans: Droplets, from $4/mo

Sales practices

Worth a closer look

We check five common sales practices and note them next to the score, without changing it. Two need a pass through checkout, which this scan didn't do. We'll add them on the next recheck.

  • Not noticed
"Unlimited" without a stated limit. "Unlimited" appears only for team members. Bandwidth and resources are listed as numbers.
  • Not checked yet
Add-ons ticked for you at checkout. This scan didn't go through checkout. The docs describe backups as an option you tick yourself when creating a Droplet.
  • Not checked yet
Prices that change at the payment step. Listed prices exclude tax, which is added based on your country. We didn't check a final invoice.
  • Not noticed
Countdown timers that reset. No timers or sale banners on the pages we read.
  • Noticed
Reviews with no source. Most quotes carry a name and company, or a G2 credit. One quote on the App Platform page is credited only to "NPS".

Questions to ask DigitalOcean
