Web hosting review

Contabo

Contabo is a German host for VPS, VDS, dedicated servers and object storage. Its site clearly explains who runs it, support hours and reply times, cancellation and refund rules, and where data is stored. A few things were harder to pin down from the website alone: which term and tax basis the listed prices use, what Auto Backup costs, the traffic limit behind "Unlimited Traffic", and past incidents on the status page.

Price over time

No intro price on Cloud VPS, so nothing jumps at renewal

Contabo shows one price per plan, with no intro discount and no renewal price. Terms run 1, 3, 6 or 12 months and renew for the same period. Monthly prices in euros from contabo.com/en/pricing on 21 Oct 2026. That page doesn't say which term the prices assume or whether VAT is included, and the homepage shows VPS from €4.99/mo.

What we found

Each finding links to the Contabo page it came from. Prices are the euro prices on contabo.com/en/pricing, which doesn't say whether VAT is included; the terms say sales tax is added.

An AI read Contabo's public pages to write these findings. When something is partly clear or not seen, it may be explained on a page we didn't read, or our scan may have missed it.
Price

Honest pricing

Partly clear · 5 pts

Contabo shows one monthly price per plan, with no intro discount and no separate renewal price. The pricing page lists Cloud VPS 10 at €4.50/mo, Cloud VPS 20 at €7.00/mo and Cloud VPS 30 at €14.00/mo, while the homepage says VPS starts from €4.99/mo. Terms run 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, but the English EU pages don't say which term the prices assume; the US VPS page says its price is the effective monthly rate on a 12-month subscription. The product list reads "Including 0% VAT", while the terms say sales tax is added at the statutory rate. The homepage lists "No Setup Fee" for VDS and dedicated servers but says nothing about VPS setup fees, and the US, Asia and Australia add a location fee shown only in the Customer Panel.

People

Who runs it

Clear · 10 pts

The About page names Contabo GmbH at Aschauer Straße 32a, 81549 Munich, Germany. It gives the register entry, HRB 180722 at the Munich local court (AG München), the VAT ID DE267602842, and two authorized executives by name. The terms say you sign with Contabo GmbH in Munich, but give the address as Welfenstrasse 22 in the header and Welfenstrasse 32a in clause 1. The privacy policy names Contabo GmbH at the Aschauer Straße address as data controller.

Problems

Uptime in public

Partly clear · 5 pts

A public status page at contabo-status.com, linked from the help centre, has sections for running, scheduled and finished items. When we looked, it showed an interruption from 15 Oct 2026 for security patching of all VPS and VDS hosts, with updates up to 20 Oct, and slower Object Storage in the APAC region since 8 Sep. We didn't see a list of past resolved incidents or uptime figures on the page. The terms promise 99.9% average yearly availability for the physical connection, and a blog post gives a detailed root cause analysis of a September 2024 outage in the Nuremberg data centre.

People

Reachable support

Clear · 10 pts

The support page says support is available 365 days a year from 8am to 11pm European time, in English and German, with an average response time of 2 hours. It also says waiting times are currently longer than usual because of high request volume. The help centre asks customers to use chat or the ticket form in the Customer Panel, and the support page also mentions email and phone. We didn't see a phone number or paid support plans on the pages we read.

Price

Fair terms

Clear · 10 pts

The terms say contracts run 1, 3, 6 or 12 months and renew for the same period unless you cancel, while one help article says contracts renew monthly. Server contracts need four weeks' notice before the term ends, and the VPS page says prepaid servers need no notice; you cancel in the Customer Panel, which shows the end date first. There is no money-back guarantee: private customers can revoke within 14 days, but businesses and domains are excluded. The refund article also allows a refund within 72 hours of an automatic renewal, except for customers in Germany, and a refund of your account balance, for which an administration fee may apply.

Data

Backups you can use

Partly clear · 5 pts

Auto Backup makes one backup a day between 9am and 5pm CET, keeps each for 10 days on a separate Contabo storage system, and lets you restore from the Customer Panel. It covers Cloud VPS only, not Storage VPS, VDS or dedicated servers. The Auto Backup page labels Cloud VPS plans "Auto Backup Included" and "Free Auto Backup", while the help centre calls it an add-on whose price shows in the panel, so we couldn't confirm the cost. Cloud VPS plans include 1 to 3 snapshots, which are deleted after 30 days and can't be downloaded. The terms make backups your job, and we didn't see a restore fee or a way to download an Auto Backup.

Data

Security basics

Partly clear · 5 pts

Customer Panel login supports two-factor login with an authenticator app, and you get 12 one-time recovery codes. DDoS protection is switched on by default and free for all servers. Contabo no longer sells SSL certificates; the help centre recommends free Let's Encrypt certificates, which renew automatically and which you install yourself with its guides. We didn't see malware scanning on the pages we read.

Data

Data location

Clear · 10 pts

The locations page lists 5 data centres in Germany, one in Portsmouth in the UK, three in the US (New York, Seattle and St. Louis), and sites in Singapore, Tokyo, Sydney and India; the About page names Nuremberg. You choose the region when you configure a server, and the US, Asia and Australia carry a location fee. You conclude a GDPR data processing agreement yourself in the DPA section of the Customer Panel. The terms say EU standard contractual clauses can be agreed for locations outside the EU.

Real specs

Partly clear · 5 pts

The pricing page lists vCPUs, RAM, storage and port speed for every plan: Cloud VPS 10 has 4 vCPUs, 8 GB RAM, 75 GB NVMe or 150 GB SSD and a 200 Mbit/s port. Dedicated servers name the CPU, such as the 12-core AMD Ryzen 9 7900 with 64 GB RAM and 1 TB NVMe. Every plan on the pricing page shows "Unlimited Traffic*" with no footnote, while the VPS page says 32 TB outbound (10 TB in Australia and Japan) and the docs say a fair usage policy applies. The docs list VPS plans under other names and sizes, such as Cloud VPS 4 with 100 GB SSD.

Easy exit

Partly clear · 5 pts

You can copy files off a server yourself with SFTP tools such as FileZilla, and we didn't see a fee for leaving. Snapshots can't be downloaded, and we didn't see a way to download an Auto Backup. Cancelling a VPS permanently deletes its snapshots and backups, so the help centre says to back up first. For domains, the terms ask for three months' notice before expiry and say moving a domain to another provider ends the contract, but we didn't see how to get an auth code.

Tech stack

Best for servers you run yourself

Hosts are built for different kinds of sites. Here is what Contabo says it runs, and on which products. Tech fit is separate from the signal score.

Best fit: tools built for it on regular plansSupported: runs on some plans, with limitsVPS plans: you set it up yourself on a server

WordPress

VPS plans

We didn't see managed WordPress hosting. The help centre has a video on installing WordPress on an existing server, and cPanel and Plesk are 1-Click images on VPS and VDS, with licences as paid add-ons.

Plans: VPS and VDS, from €4.50/mo

PHP

VPS plans

PHP runs on a server you set up yourself, for example with the cPanel or Plesk images. Help articles mention webspace packages, but we didn't see webspace plans on the pricing page, and webspace doesn't let you install your own software.

Plans: VPS, VDS and dedicated servers

Node.js & Python

VPS plans

Servers come with Linux images such as Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux, and you install runtimes yourself. We didn't see a guide for Node.js or Python apps on the pages we read.

Plans: VPS, VDS and dedicated servers

Docker & containers

VPS plans

The Dokploy 1-Click app deploys Docker-based apps on Ubuntu 24.04, from Cloud VPS 10 or Cloud VDS S. You can also boot your own ISO or QCOW2 image on VPS and VDS.

Plans: Cloud VPS 10 and up

Self-hosted apps

VPS plans

1-Click apps include n8n, Nextcloud, GitLab CE, WireGuard and Ollama. Servers are managed in the Customer Panel, a REST API or the cntb command-line tool, with cloud-init and SSH keys.

Sales practices

Worth a closer look

We check five common sales practices and note them next to the score, without changing it. Two need a pass through checkout, which this scan didn't do. We'll add them on the next recheck.

  • Noticed
"Unlimited" without a stated limit. The pricing page shows "Unlimited Traffic*" on every plan, with no footnote. The VPS page says 32 TB outbound, the US VPS page and the docs say a fair usage policy applies, and dedicated servers list "Unlimited Traffic".
  • Not checked yet
Add-ons ticked for you at checkout. This scan didn't go through checkout. The ordering guide lists Auto Backup, Private Networking and Server Monitoring as optional add-ons.
  • Not checked yet
Prices that change at the payment step. The terms say sales tax is added, and the US, Asia and Australia carry a location fee shown only in the Customer Panel. We didn't check a final invoice.
  • Not noticed
Countdown timers that reset. No countdown timers on the pages we read. The AMD Turin 32 Cores server carries a "Limited Special Offer" label with no end date, and VDS plans show "Save 20%" without saying for how long.
  • Noticed
Reviews with no source. The homepage shows ratings of 4.6/5, 4.4/5, 9.3/10 and 4.0/5 without naming where they come from. The VPS and VDS pages each quote a customer without a name.
